When a Redundancy Plan Needs…RedundancyGlobal social networking company turns to GDT for much-needed redundancy

An online social and news service with almost 400 million active users worldwide required a fully managed optical solution installed for redundancy at its three (3) primary data centers located throughout the United States. They needed engineering specialists in both optical and managed services to conduct an assessment on their redundancy plan and configuration.

GDT has been managing networks for some of the largest, most noteworthy organizations in the world, and its optical networking practice provided exactly what the customer needed. With its One GDT approach to tackling the needs of customers with experts who are laser-focused on specific technologies and solutions, GDT enlisted solutions architects and engineers from their Optical Networking and NOC Managed Services practices.

GDT’s Optical Networking professionals first conducted a thorough on-site survey of the customer’s existing network and conducted a fiber characterization study, which comprehensively tested the health and integrity of their redundant fiber. The test revealed that one of the fiber pair, which carries the traffic, didn’t work. As a result, the customer had unknowingly relied on fiber that, had it been needed, wouldn’t have been capable of transmitting data and would have cost the company millions―most likely tens of millions―in revenue.

A solution delivered seamlessly, and well ahead of schedule

GDT’s Optical and Managed Services teams worked in tandem to architect a solution that would provide a redundant solution to be fully managed from GDT’s state-of-the-art, 24x7x365 Network Operations Center (NOC), which is supported by over 150 network engineers and security analysts. To ensure the solution was perfectly deployed―and on time―GDT hired an additional optical engineer with years of expertise and empirical knowledge to work on-site to ensure a smooth and transition. In addition, he ensured the customer’s equipment would perfectly mesh with GDT’s NOC assets and architecture, and could be remotely managed.

The right technology partner, the right tools, a perfect solution

At each of the three (3) nodes, GDT installed NCS1k and NCS2k hardware, its next-gen optical hardware solution to interconnect data centers and help networks take better advantage of compute capabilities. For management and network monitoring, GDT utilized ’s EPN Manager (Evolved Programmable Network), which provided end-to-end management of network provisioning, device management and network assurance across core, edge, aggregation, and access networks.

Due to the success of both the solution’s implementation and GDT’s ongoing management of it, the customer has secured GDT’s Optical Networking and Managed Services teams to deploy the exact solution at their data centers in England and Japan.
